The Catalyst Institute, in conjunction with the Boston University School of Dental Medicine and the University of Florida, has created a series of geo-maps of dental practitioners in Massachusetts. The maps were created utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) computer-based technology to map spatially-referenced data. GIS allows users to simultaneously display a variety of data on multiple maps to determine possible spatial relationships.

For example, in the case of the maps created through this effort, the geographic location of dentists in MA who accept MassHealth (Medicaid) is plotted in relation to a comparable geographic distribution of MassHealth consumers. This allows us to better understand the experience of individuals requiring state-funded oral health care and their ability (or, in many cases, inability) to access that care in their local community. These maps include both private office and safety net practices.

Taken together, these maps are a valuable resource for policy makers, practitioners, insurers, and funders to better understand the state of the oral health care infrastructure in Massachusetts.
